Promotoras de Salud at Health West

Health West contracts with the Hispanic Health Projects (HHP) at Idaho State University to use promotoras to provide education and outreach to our Hispanic patients. The promotora model has proven to be an extremely helpful way to connect with Hispanic patients to improve their access to health care, to provide health education, and to work with them around exercise and diet. The promotoras work closely with the Health West clinics in American Falls and Aberdeen to meet the health needs of the Hispanic community.

Who are promotoras de salud?

Promotoras de salud are community members trained in basic health education. Bilingual and bicultural Promotoras offer in-home services to local Hispanic families, distributing educational materials and offering information about locally available services. Promotoras work as a team and are ready to help you improve your health. Information and education are available in both English and Spanish.

Focus groups and in-depth ethnographic interviews with community members in Southeast Idaho and Guanajuato, México are being used to explore the ways local Hispanics understand the illnesses. Using this information Promotoras have developed culturally sensitive and literacy level appropriate educational materials on the following health themes: Diabetes, Cervical/Uterine Cancer, and Breast Cancer. Current research focuses on Domestic Violence, Maternal and Child Health, and HIV/AIDS.
